Re: McLaren F1 GTR.

Post by Tay99 »

Here is a brief history of the McLaren f1 GTR. The model I am building is the number 24 car which raced at le mans in 1995 driven by
Mark Blundell, Ray Bellm and Maurizio sandro Sala.

Following its initial launch as a road car, motorsports teams convinced McLaren to build racing versions of the F1 to compete in international series. Three different versions of the race car were developed from 1995 to 1997.

Many F1 GTRs, after the cars were no longer eligible in international racing series, were converted to street use. By adding mufflers, passenger seats, adjusting the suspension for more ground clearance for public streets, and removing the air restrictors, the cars were able to be registered for road use.

F1 GTR 1995
A 1995-spec F1 GTR at the Goodwood Festival of Speed sporting the infamous 'Harrods' livery
Built at the request of race teams, such as those owned by Ray Bellm and Thomas Bscher, in order to compete in the BPR Global GT Series, the McLaren F1 GTR was a custom-built race car which introduced a modified engine management system that increased power output — however, air-restrictors mandated by racing regulations reduced the power back to 600 hp (608 PS; 447 kW) at 7,500 rpm.[61] The car's extensive modifications included changes to body panels, suspension, aerodynamics and the interior. The F1 GTR would go on to take its greatest achievement with first, third, fourth, fifth, and 13th places in the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, beating out custom built prototype sports cars. In total, nine F1 GTRs would be built for 1995.

The 1995 version of F1 GTR created so much downforce that it could run along the ceiling at 100 mph (160 km/h).[62]

F1 GTR 1996
A 1996-spec F1 GTR at the Brands Hatch circuit
To follow up on the success of the F1 GTR into 1996, McLaren further developed the 1995 model, leading to a size increase but weight decrease.[60] Nine more F1 GTRs were built to 1996 spec, while some 1995 cars were still campaigned by privateers. F1 GTR 1996 chassis #14R is notable as being the first non-Japanese car to win a race in the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC).[63] The car was driven by David Brabham and John Nielsen. The weight was reduced with around 37 kg (82 lb) from the 1995 GTR but the engine was kept detuned at 600 hp (608 PS; 447 kW) to comply with racing regulations.[15]

F1 GTR 1997
A 1997-spec F1 GTR "Long Tail" during an FIA GT Championship event
With the 2 F1 GT homologation street version s produced, McLaren could now develop the F1 GTR for the 1997 season. Weight was further reduced and a sequential gearbox was added. The engine was slightly destroked to 6.0 L instead of the previous 6.1 L. Due to the heavily modified bodywork, the F1 GTR 1997 is often referred to as the "Longtail" thanks to the rear bodywork being extended to increase downforce. A total of ten F1 GTR 1997 were built for the 1997 season. The weight was reduced to a total of 910 kg (2,010 lb)

Ok a small up date started adding some of the PE to the rear engine cover, and the intakes in the doors, bonet and roof.
Forgot I had a diecast model for a bit of reference.

Hi all thanks for the comments, been working away this week so haven't got much done.

Managed to get the PE brakes done, had to remove the plastic from the disc part of the brake from the kit and then make them up with the PE set. Also got the wheels done , I had some orange from zero paints, it was a bit to orange so added a few drops of red to get to the color you see below, I used alclad Klear kote gloss.

Image

I painted the discs with Mr metal dark Iron and the centres with super metallic super gold.

Image

The centres nuts were painted sliver and then clear blue for the right hand side and clear red for the left.

Image

That's all folks.

I've also built the rear wing with the added PE parts will post pictures of that and the suspension in the next post,
Nows the fun bit with body work, masking and painting the silver gold colour.

Hi all.

Small up date to night didn't get much time in the man cave.

Made the wing the other night, 4 pieces of PE for each up right 1 each for the end plate and the gurney flap on the top wing.

Image

Image

This is what I've been working on to night some of the PE for the interior, I think it's the anchor point for the seat belts, the hobby designs instruction are not that clear.

Image

This is made up of 2 PE parts, one 12.4mm Silver tube and to very very small rivets.
Here is 1 next to a cocktail stick.

Image

Fist I glued the 2 PE parts to the cockpit and then held the silver tube between the gap and mark it for length.
Next problem how to cut it accuretley,
Dermil to the rescue.

Image

Image

Next was the tricky pit hold the tube between the PE plates and then get the rivets in, both were held in with CA glue.

Image

That's all for now thanks for looking.

I really like the detail of the PE work, just increases the realism so much :thumb2:
My favourite part is the rear wind and the little bolts on the side
This will be beautiful :D

Thanks for comments guys.

Manage to get home early today and after submitting my Vat return. Made a start on the gold/orange colour.

First up the masking.
It wasn't to bad the hardest part was the front bonet, because the gold paint curves out towards the front,
I made a photo copy of the decals and cut out the orange line that divides the two paints and used that as a guide.
It's not perfect but hopefully the orange dividing line will cover up any mistakes.

Image

And here it is after the paint was airbrushed on.

Image

Image

And here she is unmasked.
Slight over spray on one of the doors a touch up needed on the front of the rear wheel arch.:

Image

Image

Image

And quick mock up to see what see looks like with her boots on.

Thanks guys for the comments.

Next update sprayed some gloss coat on the paint ready for the decals.

Image

While that's drying I made a start on the interior and engine bay.
I made some templates with tape and then used them to cut the carbon fibre decal.

Image

I also found some ref pictures and found out I had put the PE parts for the seatbelt anchor points in the wrong place
so removed them and placed them in the right place.also Placed carbon fibre decal on the seat.

Image

I did the same method in the engine bay for the carbon fibre, painted the exhaust pipes with a mixture of mr hobby metal silver and gold. I sanded the PE cam cover to show the raised lettering.

Image

That's all for now thanks for looking.

Hi all.

Thanks for all the comments.
Made a start on the decals yesterday and today.

Image

The White number on the front didn't conform to the cutout and split when it dried I've touched it up with a bit of white paint.

The kit came with some window masks which had to be cut out.

Image

Then sprayed with Matt black.

Image

Then glued the front and rear windscreen in place. I've also sprayed semi gloss black to the bottom of the side of the car and rear wing, ready for the rest of the decals.

Image

That's all for now tanks for looking.
