I didn't realise just how big the Stirling was. Just found this on Wikipedia and it blew me away! :jd:

Image

Also didn't realise it had its origins in the Sunderland flying boat - same wing design before it got beefed up for more lift to cope with the extra weight of the aircraft. You can see the Sunderland DNA origins when you look at it.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

I wonder where the B-17 is between those shown :

Forced myself to do a bit of modelling and make some progress
Have a mind block with these turrets and guns. Kit ones are piddly little styrene strands, so I have attempted to make some Brownings with aluminum.
I have to make circles for the cooling jackets, not slots

Image

Image

These are a smidge over scale, but nothing like a pair of big guns out front :shifty: ;)
Not really happy with these, might order some PE or try again making them
Image

Also made the radio operator’s table as that area of the Port wall is visible through the top window

Calling no joy on the hockey try out.
Only two try out teams, six goalies and some very lacklustre play. I think the team does not require any new goalies for the season, at least the coach was kinda shifty in the exit interview with my kid.
No one really stood out good or bad. He did fine but was told looked scrambly and out of position. Previously he gets told is too robotic and stiff :
He did a full splits save on someone after defence fumbled at clearing the front  oh well, would be a difficult commute to see games, a bit unorganized management and I have a horrific lady pt whose son is on the team. So no big loss.

Great work on the radio operator's position and bravo on replacing the gun barrels for the turrets. No mean feat in 1/72 scale!

Shame the hockey was a bit of a washout but as you said, probably better off out of it given the circumstances. Live to fight another day :th:

Same as what Stokesy said!

Great work on the extra details on the brick but a real shame about the hockey.

Does that mean he has no team for next season (which would be a real shame) or is it back the same place/league he's been playing up until now?

Ya the details look ok...nothing like the PE sets guys are using, but oh well

These are all the pre-try outs before the main camps to make a junior team. One more to attend still.
So he has made two team's main camps to try and win a roster spot plus a third team that is a maybe but it is with his last year's coach who is now the head coach and he likes Ced a lot. He will practice with these three over the next two months before they do their main camps.
A lot more options than he had last year

Thinking of either doing a cut open fuselage or maybe make the birdcage cockpit glass removable

I bit the bullet and bought some Browning 303 Barrels off eBay today.
Mine are too cartoonish and for $20 I got eight metal barrels that will match perfectly
Time vs money argument as I would spend more effort/time and still not get the results

Cheers guys on the hockey support...sorry to others to drone on like a over-proud parent, since that is what I am :D

They are 'Mini World' British Browning .303 Aircraft Machine gun barrels.

I cannot duplicate that slot in the cooling jacket and the knurled part at the end of the barrel.
These just looked too good and for $20 to get 8 of them...sold

Alright you thread stealing hooligans, time for some real model building
Or in this case, my model building :shifty:

I have done the interior, with the latest addition a new front bulkhead with a sliding door to close off the nose section machine turret .
See otherwise it is wide open to the pilot’s feet and makes no sense .... at high altitude they would all die. So I made a bulkhead

Image

Image

Image

I think this is all for interior details...no wait I am going to add detail to the tail section where the rear door is located so I will have that lying open.
I cannot close up the fuselage until I finish all the turrets, but am waiting for the metal machine gun barrels anyways.
I am shifting between building a Suzuki motorcycle and this Sterling Image

Ok I think the interior proper is done now
Found a great cut away schematic
Image

I added a plywood plank floor and some rear fuselage supports as the rear entrance door will be open
Just areas that could be visible were detailed.
Image

Image

Then amazingly enough I remembered to add some lead nose weight before the fusealge halves are together....I usually forget until after.
Image

I am enjoying this build and really looking forward to those metal machine guns arriving :pistols:

Nice work on the detailing down the back end. mate

Interesting about adding the weight though  I'd never considered it for a tail sitter before but it's the same as adding weight to an armour kit to give it that heft... hmmm... there's space in the Buckingham...

Yes good point
I may trim the turrets to go in after fuselage is together.
Just been thinking on that exact plan

Working on the front turret.
These gun barrels are awesome. Smallest machine gun belts I could make with Tamiya tape and stretched sprue
I will wrap the turret glass in styrene strips to look like the metal reinforcements. Probably do the same to the cockpit glass.

Does that mean you will sand off the turret reinforcement markings or are they just not there ?

Ya. Not totally sure how I will go about it yet  : No kit detail in the clear parts at all for the metal framework :wtf:
Will build all three guns fully before the fuselage goes together, but might be difficult fitting in the glass and such after the fact.
So may have to insert them AS the halves go together and then cover them up for fill, sand and paint steps.
We shall see

Sorry mate I buggered up your quote somehow there :
