Airfix 1/72 Phantom FG.1 Reveal

Post by alextheblue »

Finally finished and I thoroughly enjoyed this build. Okay, I had a moan at the start with regards to a couple of fit issues, but these moments pass and are soon forgotten. Especially once it's all done and finished. Also, I have been reliably informed that most Phantom kits have fit problems around the air intakes and that its not just Airfix. On the whole though, the fit is very good and it's a nicely engineered kit.

Paints were mostly Tamiya, apart from the the white which was Mr Hobby Aqueous. Weathering was kept to a minimum with a dark dirt wash over the whole model, but this was taken right back so there was very little left. A black pin-wash was applied to landing gear and wheel wells, and that was about it. It was sealed with Tamiya X22 gloss, but sprayed at 30 psi in very light coats. The intention was leave more of a satin finish than a gloss and on the whole I was fairly pleased with the outcome.

My only negative was with the decals. Not the quality, as they went down very nicely, but the sheer quantity. I know more modern jets have a lot of stencils etc., but it took me longer to do this part than to build, paint and weather it. If decal-ing is your thing, then this is the kit for you!

The pics.
