1/72 Condor Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-25U Foxbat

Post by Maverick231 »

Morning all!
My second build for this GB will be as mentioned above but in english, Condor's 1/72 scale Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25U Foxbat.
Here is a little background information on the Trisonic masterpiece courtesy of Wikipedia:

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 (Russian: Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-25; NATO reporting name: Foxbat) is a Trisonic interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft that was among the fastest military aircraft to enter service. It was designed by the Soviet Union's Mikoyan-Gurevich Bureau, and is one of the few combat aircraft built primarily using stainless steel. It was the last plane designed by Mikhail Gurevich before his retirement.

The first prototype flew in 1964, and the aircraft entered service in 1970. It has an operational top speed of Mach 2.83 (Mach 3.2 is possible but at risk of significant damage to the engines), and features a powerful radar and four air-to-air missiles. When first seen in reconnaissance photography, the large wing suggested an enormous and highly maneuverable fighter, at a time when U.S. design theories were also evolving towards higher maneuverability due to combat performance in the Vietnam War. The appearance of the MiG-25 sparked serious concern in the West and prompted dramatic increases in performance for the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle then under development in the late 1960s. The capabilities of the MiG-25 were better understood in 1976 when Soviet pilot Viktor Belenko defected in a MiG-25 to the United States via Japan. It turned out that the aircraft's weight necessitated its large wings.

Production of the MiG-25 series ended in 1984 after completion of 1,190 aircraft. A symbol of the Cold War, the MiG-25 flew with Soviet allies and former Soviet republics, remaining in limited service in several export customers. It is one of the highest-flying military aircraft, fastest serial produced interceptor aircraft and the second fastest serial produced aircraft after the SR-71 reconnaissance aircraft that was built in very small numbers compared to the MiG-25. As of 2018, the MiG-25 remains the fastest manned serial produced aircraft in operational use, and the fastest plane that was offered for supersonic flights and edge of space flights to civilian customers.

Onto the Kit.

Content shot:

I can assume this wasn't Condor's intended state of the kit:
A huge crack/break in the rear fuselage.
Image
I guess someone fulled the tail section off the sprew.
Image
Theres a tiny hole in one of the gear wells.
Image
And a crater under one of the wing sections:
Image

So onto progress:
First task on the agenda is gluing the break in the fuselage:
Image
Image

And here she is last night after filling all the holes and breaks aswell as building the fuselage sections, Tail sections and the duel ring that holds the afterburners in place:

So since the last update I've put the wings and break shoot hatch on:
Image
Built the Air intakes and found a huge break in one of them so that needed filling:
Image
Both cockpit tubs have been installed, some weight glued in and forward fuselage halves closed up:
Image
I broke one of the pieces off the wing tips whilst building:
Image
And finally after gluing the cockpit and intakes on and the first round of filling and sanding:
Image
Until the next time..........

Welcome back Maverick!

I didn't know anything about Condor so this will be a first for me. Nice work so far on straightening out the damaged parts.

Nice touch with the Russian title too even if it did start Scott's hammer twitching

Haha well that got people looking so it worked!

After going to the IPMS Lincoln & Newark Model Expo today I was fired up enough to do a bit on the Foxbat.
Image
I put the cockpit details in including a missing instrument panel made out of a coffee stirrer and painted using paint pens.
I filled the nose cone with more weight and attached and sanded to shape to match the fuselage, then I trimmed the cLear parts, gave them a klear dip, masked them and pva'd them I to place.
And last but not least I glued the main wheels together.

With great difficulty I put the gear legs in place.
The difficulty came in the form of the supports being so weak and bent under pressure and one side of the support cradle in the gear bay was too slim and I had to really glue it to the bay wall but it all feels strong now after tests.Image

Well the canopy was next to do.
4 pieces and a lot of work so I started my cutting them off the sprew tree and sanding them smooth, I then klear dipped them.
Masking them was actually really easy, I thought I was going to have issues with the amount of cuts that was needed in the masking tape but to my delight the lines in the frames were really easy to see and a brand new no.11 blade glided through it like butter.
Fitting them went well too, this has been possibly the easiest step so far in this build!

Next step is sorting out the wing probe and priming her.

Priming was done using cheap ProDriver Grey Primer which I bought a ton of from Poundland and now it's onto the main paintwork using Halfords Polar Grey:

I spent what turned out to be nearly 3 hours masking and spraying the silver engine areas:

OK so tonight whilst watching ISM Live at the bench I got to work with painting all the Foxbat's "little extras" 😅
So the 2 shades of grey on the leading edge of the tail:
Image
Then the two under fuselage fins:
Image
And the black around the cockpit area:
Image
For this I used Vallejo Model Air Agressor Gray 71.274, Dark Sea Gray 71.053 and Black 71.057.

Tonight I actually finished what I'd planned!
A first for me.
So I put 1 layer of klear/pledge on before the decal markings then as the decals were quite thick and had sort of a carbon fibre texture to them I put a further 7 layers on top of them to make sure they were sealed.
Here she is:

Tonight I managed to get most of what I had planned to do on the Foxbat done, what I did not expect was to make a wrong move and send her flying a few feet to the ground causing one of her horizontal stabilisers and the other wing probe to break off as well as setting the nose weight loose so she now rattles when she's picked up.
So with her being very much Russian built and Ukrainian flown during the Cold War she needed a wash....or 100!
Image
I've only given the grey paint a black wash, I'm going to give the engine silver a rust wash tomorrow see what effect is given.

Great to see you're still making progress mate - shame about the unplanned test flight but I think we've all been there!

Keep at it you're nearly there
