1/72 Zvezda Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-1.44 Flatpack

Post by Maverick231 »

Evening everyone.
For my third entry I'll be going with the 1/72 Zvezda MiG-1.44 Flapjack.

So as I normally do here's some background information on the Flapjack provided by Wikipedia:
The Mikoyan Project 1.44(Russian: Микоян МиГ-1.44; NATO reporting name: Flatpack) was a technology demonstrator developed by the Mikoyan design bureau.
It was the Soviet Union's answer to the US's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF), incorporating many fifth-generation jet fighter aspects such as advanced avionics, stealth technology, supermaneuverability, and supercruise.
The design's development was a protracted one, characterised by repeated and lengthy postponements due to a chronic lack of funds.
The MiG-1.44 made its maiden flight in February 2000, nine years behind schedule, and was cancelled later that year.

Onto the Kit:
This is the original 2004 boxing of Zvezda's Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-1.44 Flapjack.

I started this on Friday the 9th of November which was the night before Telford or "Set Up Friday".
Until today I've not had chance to post a thread on the build so I'll post it all in one to make things easier.
So the first thing I did was paint and assemble the Ejection Seat, I have painted the gray bit since these pics:

Then I got onto assembling the nose section, it's standard cockpit in, nose weight added then close her up like on any other kit.
The internal Intake parts were next, 3 pieces in total but I was worried as they didn't seem too strong but that didn't last long as once the rest of the air intakes were added it was quite solid.
Image

Saturday night after getting home from the first day of SMW18 I could only muster the energy to remove the wings, tails and a section that completes the tail booms which I glued on:

So onto the night after Telford on the 11th.
The main gear wells and a sort of casing for the front gear bay had to be fitted to the inside of the fuselage as well as the internal engine "cages" and forward facing engine fans.
I was going to paint the engine fans but upon test fitting I noticed that their not visible at all so I didn't bother.
Again after a busy and exhausting weekend that's all I could manage to do that night and we were all a little shacken after witnessing a major accident on the journey home.
Image

Monday the 12th the main fuselage was glued together with the wing sandwiches as well as joining the nose and fuselage sections and finishing off the forward air intake assembly.
Image

And then finally last night(14th November) I installed the tail fins, under fuselage fins, flap actuator housings and the 2 weapon pylons:

So far Zvezda have lived up to what I expected, it must be one of the best and easiest kits I've ever built!

Here's the afterburner "cages" I was on about.

Last night I only managed to do abit more filling and sanding on the forward fuselage section and mask off the inside of the cockpit ad I plan on having the canopy open and saw this as an easier way around it:

Well this is one I didn't know existed until now!

I've got a Zvezda SU-27 I'm intending to break out soon so hoping the quality is as good as you're seeing on this.
Cheers, Neil

Thanks TomCat, from what I've read and heard the SU-27 is a newer more advanced mold than the MiG-1.44 so I'd think you should have no problem!

Anyway here is were I'm at with the Flatpack:
Image
I used Vallejo Model Air Black, it's my first attempt at preshading with an airbrush so I'm really looking forward to seeing the effect it gives with a panel wash.
I'm not going to weather her that much like I did to the Foxbat as I want the appearance of new paintwork like she's just been rolled out of the paintshop after her restoration.

Apparently on inspection after work I missed areas which needed preshading.
That's one of the down sides of working on a kit late at night and into the early hours.

It's taken a while due to various things including another kit getting in the way but tonight I finished off the masking and applied the blue paint to the underside of the fuselage:

Thanks Tomcat!
The blue I used is Vallejo Model Air 71.317 AII SV. GOL Light Blue.

Looking back through the thread I've noticed I haven't posted about the following that came before the blue update:

Upper Grey surfaces have been painted using Vallejo Model Air 71.050 Light Grey:
Image
Once the Light Grey had dried I started masking using a cheaper version of Tamiya tape found in Boyes Shops and Clingfilm:
Image
And once that was done I used a spare PE Seat Belt that was still in the spares box:

I wouldn't have said I was quick at modelling haha thanks though!

Right so here is what she looks like after unmasking, there is a bit of touching up to do as the paint leaked:
Image

Update:
I won't bother posting a pic of another post as the model looks the same so I'll update this post instead.

So all touch ups are done and the Klear is half done.
I just need to give the bottom of the model a coat.

It worked out really well, there's still a tiny bit of yellowing but it can only be noticed slightly when dealing the blue bas areas.

I'm ever so sorry I missed the bit in the rules stating the finishing date was 30th November, when everyone said it was all year I just assumed it ran till 31st of December sorry everyone!

Not a problem mate - I decided not to close it down at the end of November for a couple of reasons...
1. There were still a couple of you working on builds
2. I forgot

Anyway please keep working and posting - hopefully you'll get it over the line by the end of the year :cheers2:

Happy new year everyone!
