Aoshima McLaren F1 GTR Longtail 1/24

Post by Bdiddy »

Hey blokes, no modelling rest for the wicked so I thought I'd start another build thread.

This was my favourite car as a kid so have been excited to build this kit for a while, I'm pretty scared to start this as there's a couple of firsts for me - first race car, first time using Zero Paints & first time using PE.

Im using Zero Paints McLaren F1 Lark Pink, its really bright and looks awesome :pistols:

The detail up kit is from Hobby Design and also looks awesome.

Thanks for lookin in & hope you guys will follow me on the build :cheers2: :cheers2:

Damn man I’ve been looking for the gulf version for ages but haven’t been able to find one, it’s the only reason that I ended up getting this one

I built an Aoshima McLaren a couple of years back and really enjoyed it. There was a bit of faffing about to get the gearbox installed, and the door hinges were a little fiddly but otherwise it went together really well - looking forward to seeing how you put this together :pop:

Thanks Neil and Chris!

@Tomcat64 the kit does seem pretty tricky and the instructions seem to have a habit of telling you to paint some exterior parts body colour yet when looking at the box art they’re black or carbon fibre.
I’m going to allow the doors to open so fingers crossed they both line up nicely and don’t give me to many headaches :bash:

Yes! This is a great kit. If you can get your hands on a set of the S27 carbon decals I highly recommend it. If you need any reference pics I've still got a bunch I'd be happy to send through too.

I did mine with the doors open and as Tomcat64 said, they are pretty tricky to get right

I've just been back and found my build log and the other slight niggle was getting the rear panel to sit down properly with the gearbox cooling duct in place, but overall as I said I really enjoyed the build - although my paint job was slightly easier than yours as it was an all black one :D

If you want to see how I cocked it up the build log is here

And Tay built the Gulf scheme one in the same group build here

Have fun :cheers2:

Hey blokes, I thought it was time for a well over due update, haven't had as much time smashing plastic as I'd hoped

I normally start my builds with the the engine, interior running gear etc and leave the body till last but this time I thought id try it the other way round.

Undercoat sprayed with SMS surfacer white, first time using it and it sprays pretty nicely but is quite thin and due to the plastic being red, I used the whole 50ml, you can that the body turned pinkish and not pure white. I don't think I'll use it on another model with red plastic.
Image

Image

I then sprayed the body in Zero Paints McLaren Lark Pink, first time using Zero and man is this stuff nice to spray, being such a light colour it took a fair few light coats but the colour is stunning! It's almost like a bright fluoro pink but the camera made it look red
Image

Hopefully get a couple of clear coats done tomorrow night so I can then start the decals.

Cheers for lookin in :cheers2: :cheers2:

Apologies for the delay in posting lads, been busy with a lot of other stuff (bloody kids).

Was hoping to post some pics of the body decaled & cleared but there were a few minor things that I wasn't happy about with the paint so ive stripped it and now waiting for the primer to dry.

Thought I'd get stuck into the running gear, engine has been sprayed with SMS aluminium and the rest of the parts in Tamiya LP gold leaf & Alclad chrome. Just waiting on the CF decals to arrive so I can add the rocker covers and exhaust.
Image

Rims sprayed with Tamiya LP gunmetal & gold leaf, they've turned out pretty sweet.
Image

Also got cracking on some PE, the disc brakes look a hell of a lot better, they just need priming and then a splash of paint. The undercarriage wings just need a light sand and a splash of paint but I think they look pretty sweet compared to the factory part.
ImageImage

Hopefully it won't be as long between the next update.

Cheers for lookin in :cheers2: :cheers2:
