Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
Thanks BigWall!
Ok, let's continue. As you understand by now I will not be able to make it across the finishing line in time, but I will of course press on with the build until it is finished. I want this off my work-bench before I can focus on the next build and I don't want to put it on hold anymore...
Masked the heatshields

Fixing the gaps in the wing-fences with some diluted Tamiya Putty

Some touch-up with black primer.

...OK - we are finally ready for painting the marble coat and the blend coat. I will do some experiments on the primed spoons tomorrow before I commit to paint on the model

Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
I did try putty for the wind spliters, but found it difficult to sand and not break off the PE, settled for CA as mentioned, glad you sorted it
Just be careful, I knocked of my at regular intervals

Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
Thanks guys
Yeah, I had to be very careful when sanding, I used the Ultimate customisable sanding sheets cut in cobination with regular sandingsticks. It's not perfect, but it will doKevthemodeller wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2020 9:52 am I did try putty for the wind spliters, but found it difficult to sand and not break off the PE, settled for CA as mentioned, glad you sorted it![]()

Ok, done some paint testing on spoons:
Two types of marble coat

Added the blend coat using highly diluted H335 Medium Sea Gray

I will use a combination of those two on the aircraft I think...

Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
Paints - finally!
Marble coat first

I used a mix of both H325 and H338 in separate layers
Starting with the Blend coat - H335

Done - that took an hour or two...

...but I forgot the outsides of the hatches

Distressed medium sea gray basecoat done

Next up will be some detail painting (radomes, antennas and stuff like that...)

Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
Thanks Neil
I have started with the decals today. It's the last week of my vacation so I have to fix all the stuff I have promised to do during the vacation
So I have only spent an hour or so today, hope to be able to have time to continue tomorrow...
There is a large sheet of decals (made by Cartograf) included in the kit and they are very good. The instructions are, however, less than good...
The decals and stencils are spread out over 4 sheets, and there are errors, wrong numbers, references that does not exist on the decal sheet. So everything goes very slow, because I have have to double-check everything.

But the good news is that there is a detonation-cord decal included in the decal sheet (but it's not mentioned in the instructions anywhere).
The individual have been chosen: ZD610

Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
Thanks a lot!
Yes, it's starting to look like a real SHAR now
I'm continuing with the decals and the progress is s bit slow - but I'm not in any hurry (anymore)
I have found this walkaround to be very useful for double-checking the placement of the stencils:
http://nabe3saviation.web.fc2.com/waSHa.html
The lo-vis roundel on the underside of the wing should be placed *before* attaching the pylons, so I had to improvise

...slowly getting there

The black edges on the tail-fin are a little bit too small, so I will have to touchup that with some black paint later on...

Thanks a for all the cheers, it's much appreciated!
Final push to complete the stencils...

And I have glossed the complete aircraft with GX-100 thinned with MLT

Next step will be some additional detail-painting of the small thrust nozzles, but it will require some masking so need to let the gloss coat cure properly before I can do that...

Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
Hello,
Only a short update today; I have ended my vacation and started to work again - man, that sucks
Masking the small trust nozzles to prep for painting; I wonder why I didn't do this directly after painting the base-coat (that would have been much smarter)

Added some extra "masking" using a post-it sticker...

Painted with Collector Escape. The smallest nozzles where brushpainted because it was to difficult to mask them

Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
Me too! But I'm close to the finish line now...
Thanks!
Thanks Matt!
I have put this build back in the box a couple of times and I have even considered ditch the build completely, but I have done so much detailing and scratchbuilding on it that I feel that I must carry on. But now everything seems to come together and I feel that all that hard work is starting to pay off.
Okay, this will be a long update...
Flatcoated everything with GX-113 thinned with MLT

..and it's time for unmasking

I'm really nervous about the air scoop and cockpit

But it went well!
Problem.... the white tac has started to leak down in the cockpit tub

Most of it fixed, but there is som tac left between the wind screen and the IP cover

I was able to fix that to an acceptable level - I managed to dig most of it out using a piece of paper. The rest will have to pass as "weathering"

Installed the exhausts. I spent half an hour checking reference photos and I decided to for horisontal, since most of the parked aircrafts had them positioned like that.

Painting the nav lights

Installing landing gear...

...and it can stand on it's own!

...well, almost. I had to sand down the cental landing gear wheel a bit to make it rest on the outrigger-wheels

Added the droptanks and landing gear doors

...and the horisontal stabilisers

Next update will probably be the last one! I hope to be able to finish the build tomorrow, since this is the first weekend in 2 months that me and my family haven't been busy...

Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
Thanks guys!
I was a bit too optimistic about being able to finish the build today, so I will need one day more I think
Today I have spent most of the day with the missiles and the canopy
Prepared all small parts by putting them on cocktail-sticks

The paint instructions for the AMRAAMs seemed a bit too simplistic, so I had to double-check

So let's get started with primer

I used primer as a filler for a couple of gaps

Painting - I used H308 Gray FS36375, H1 White and H337 Grayish Blue FS35237

I need to brushpaint the fins with a dark metal tone, but I'll do that tomorrow
Decals

And I have also worked on the canopy
Painting the det-cord, using microscope for painting and cleanup

Some PE for the rear mirror

Painting it with Molotov Chrome diluted with MLT

Re: Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2
Hey Guys!
Final build update - it feels almost wierd
Finishing the missiles

Lost and Found

This piece of PE pinged away from the aircraft at some point - I don't know when that happened and I didn't see that it was missing. But when I took a break earlier today I saw something grey on the concrete floor that looked familiar
Attached the canopy. I had to check some pictures to find the correct position.

Last thing; the pitot tubes

I was planning to scratch build something but after some consideration I sacrificed a 1/72 scale Viggen pitot tube set

Painted it in bright metal (H8 SIlver)

And we are done!

I will take better photos tomorrow for the Reveal post
