Very cool. I have one of these in the stash. Can you provide the files you used for the layout?

hehe, not cool, just want to try new things.

First I tried to make the corridors, it is very difficult because it is a toroid.

I tried styrene to make the corridors but I could not fold it properly.

Then I changed to extruded polystyrene to sculpt the corridors.

What are you considering for lights?
You can get some very small “smd” surface mount diodes that are tiny and pump out lots of light in different colours
I am sure you are a wiz with electronics already, I am just starting into them

I plan to use fiber optics and RGB leds controlled by a Arduino. I think that it's more power efficient and more easy to manage that individual leds.
Here is a youtube tutorial about fiber optics.

The main walls done.

Image

Check that I can close the model

Image

Firts tests with RGB Leds
For the engine I plan to use a RGB strip. WS2812 strip 5050rgb chip

I can change the colors of RGB Leds from blue to white
From Blue
Image
to White
Image

Individual RGB leds also works.

Image

The individual leds are identical to the strip ones.
These individual leds are for the fiber optics.

I see you know what you are doing with electronics...breadboard and resistors and such.
I wish I had more time for doing more builds with LED's as they are so versatile now.

All electronic that I know, I learned in youtube. It's very basic and there is a lot of videos about leds and Arduino.

All your comments are welcome, I post to share, comment, discuss with all of you. :)

The Making of: The engine

This is a reference picture
Image

First attempt: Fail. The heat drestroy the fiber.
Image

I want to use fiber optics to make the pipes glow.
Second attempt: Good
Image

A little of styrene and aluminium wire.
Image

Also I finished the crew room. Need to paint it.
Image

I Added 2 leds to make the engine bright

Looks good :th:

Testing the warning red lights

Image
You can see the Arduino board (horizontal) and the bluetooth board (vertical)
The RGB led inside the black rubber tube and the fibers optics.

For the RGB led: 3 wires (-5, grnd, data) for input, and 3 wires of output to connect the next led

and the result
Image

With the RGB leds I can regulate the color and intensity. by example:

Doors

I need 2 doors for the interiors

I am going to use Oyumaru to make copies of the cabin door.

Image

To use Oyumary paste, you need to heat it with hot water.

Image

The mold
Image

I made 3 copies. One with styrene and two with milliput.
I will used the "milliput" ones, are better.

Electronics: Sound and motor lights

First test: Fail :x

Once everything was wired and the system tested, I found several problems:
  • The speaker that I bought is very small 2.5cm and does not reproduce well the bass. This has an easy solution, I'm going to catch another bigger one.
  • The microprocessor does not have enough power to read and transmit the audio file from the SD card to the amplifier. So micro-cuts are heard and the audio quality is very low.
  • The LED strip interferes with the sound. The library of the LED strip uses microinruptions to send the data to the LEDs and this makes it interfere with the sound.

So I changed my strategy.

I used this mini DFPlayer module which is basically an MP3 player and combined SD card reader and does not even reach € 2 on Aliexpress.

In this way the microcontroller does not have to do the work of reading from the SD card and pass all the audio to the speaker, work that overloads it, but this module does it directly independently. The microcontroller will only tell you "play track 1" and the module takes care of everything.

Then the second test: Succeed!

This is the Fritzing schema of the board.

More electronics

I soldered all components in a board
The left to right: Arduino, MP3 player, Bluetooth communication.
Image

This is my first time soldering a board.
I am not proud of this.
Image

The second board was better.
Image

This is the placement of all components inside the model.
Image

Testing if all works.

I still have to synchronize the sound with the light, but now that I have everything on the boards, it is much easier.

It might work, or maybe the idea will spawn another and a solution! Who knows! Just fabulous work...I just love this project.
