Baby it's cold outside - 1/35 Tamiya StuG iii & Miniart Diorama

Post by Tomcat64 »

Hello Everyone,

I'm very pleased to finally be able to reveal the StuG iii ausf G diorama that I've been working on since January 2nd - this is by a long, long way the most complex project I've ever attempted.

This was the third GB/SIG that I've taken part in and the first that I've been able to join since the start, which is just as well as it's taken me pretty much the whole 4 months (less four days). I've really enjoyed taking part in this Group Build and I'd like to thank anyone that followed along with the build and especially those who took the time to comment and offer advice and encouragement - it definitely helped when the mojo was dropping.

The build thread is here for anyone who wants to take a look through.

But for some quick stats first this was my third 1/35 armour build since returning to the hobby and my second go with a Miniart diorama - the first was just a wall! There were a number of firsts as well including my first full interior for an afv, and my first time around with workable track links. In all the components for this came from eighteen different sets of kits and after-market components not counting paint, rubble and weathering effects. I took over 500 photos during the build and posted over 300 of them, there's part of me that wishes I'd kept a log of the hours taken but there's another part that's glad I didn't.

I said in the opening post of the build thread that I was "trying to give the impression of wind-driven freezing temperatures outside of the ruins, with the buildings offering some minimal shelter for those inside" Hopefully I've managed it.

Anyway enough rambling - here are the photos; there's quite a few of them as there's a lot I want to try and show you.

Superb work sir. The final composition is amazing. The whole thing has really come together well and the finished snow effects are beautiful. I love how you have shown the snow on the soldiers too. They genuinely look cold.

It looks great from every angle too. Brilliant.

Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

I didn't like it...... I loved it!!!

I've really enjoyed following your build and I've learnt a great deal, primarily that I'm not very good... You've set a very high bar for others to attain or like me and Fosbury, we'll just flop

Credit where it due my friend, this captures your original mission statement with ease. By far one of the best dioramas I've followed being built. Congratulations and well done

Thanks mate - I really appreciate your comments and your support through the build :cheers2:

Don't sell yourself short though, FWIW I think you've already got really good skills, a great eye for composition and a load of potential. A lot of what's come together for me in this build is the result of picking up tips, tricks and techniques from other people's build threads. There's no way I'd have even contemplated tackling something like this a couple of years back and if I'm honest I'm still a little taken aback as to how well it's turned out.

And remember Mr Fosbury may have flopped but he got over the bar doing it :)

Oh wow Neil. You mentioned you did "Winter is coming", because I joined here after winter!! haha! and just looked today!

:jd:

It was awesome all the way through and then I saw the bike with the snow, the internals of the tank and for some reason, even though I would have been too young to have been in WWII, the German guy looking out of the broken glass, in the window on the second floor blew... my... mind!: No way with those figures, my God you captured that image!

Such an awesome diorama my friend, so freaking well done! :thumb2: :thumb2: :thumb2:

I would like to know tho, who slipped off the roof?
