2020 Group or Special Interest Builds

Post by DBMiller »

Any one been giving thought to having another year of GB's or SiG's? Having only two builds was a great idea so maybe the same for this year?

I'm always up for SciFi - naturally.

Me too. I've been wanting an excuse to build either the Bandai AT-AT or the Speeder Bike with scout

Well next year is the 75th anniversary of the end of ww2, so what about a GB themed around that? A late war aircraft/vehicle GB perhaps?
Thanks, Andrew

Me too! 6 months is about right for me - at my fastest!

That would be a good one! Late war equipment or end of war celebrations.

Probably a bit late to this one now, but late war & Sci Fi both work for me; and the Wheeled things build this year gave plenty of scope for both civilian & military wheeled vehicles.

As potential alternatives if we're looking at longer timescales how about one we kicked around last year which was the "Unicorn" build - that kit you've got in the stash that you really want to get around to but never seem to find the right time or are simply scared of!

Either way we need to try and get a higher level of participation (again) if we want the GBs & SIGs to keep going - the entries for the Hovering SIG are coming along well which has been nice to see, so I guess it's all about hitting the right subject.

I've never been apart of a GB. They do look very fun.

Goah if it was to be a Unicorn build it would probably be my Zvezda T-35. Biggest vehicle in my stash by far and I'm terrified of messing it up

I'm for a "Unicorn" build. I have a few that have been waiting for the right mental state (like that's going to happen).

I think a desert build would be fun. Any subject from any period but must be in desert colours - could get some cool dios out of it.

I think vague broader spectrum GB's are the way to go, that allow people to use their imagination a bit, I think it would make a more interesting GB overall for all the readers. It would also give more people the opportunity to take part, i.e. people that want to build armour but not planes or cars and vice versa.

So for instance, 'The 1980's'

Picking a decade is a good idea. Last year's GBs were far too vague for me. A lot of the enjoyment is finding a kit to fit the theme, but could have just picked any old thing for Tracks and Wings.

How about a Prototype build.....anything that never saw combat.
Late WW2 would be good too.

That there looks like a pretty good selection for voting to me - and we could throw in digger's prototype suggestion as well just to see what the take up is like?

Just on the 1980's one - what are the thoughts there? Anything introduced in the 80s or anything you'd see in use if you popped back with a well equipped DeLorean?

My thinking was just ANYTHING you might associate with a certain decade no matter how tenuous, if you could come up with a link to that decade, it would be fair game.

The 80's popped into mind as there was a lot of cool new 'stuff' being introduced, cars, great films, cold war still bubbling in the background, the Falklands etc etc, I just thought a subject where you would be afforded a little artistic licence would stir up a more interesting GB than a fixed subject.

Ok that works :th:

I just realised that if 30 years is as far back as a DeLorean will go then we can no longer make it to the 80s... how did that happen!?

On a serious note, how about a long term diorama build. It could run for a year and could be any subject. I was thinking full on diorama rather than a vignette or a model on a base. I know some people are put off building dio's, but really enjoy them once they give them a go.

Loving all the ideas so far, the 80's and the desert would be my favorites of those suggested. I'd maybe suggest a naval theme to add to the list, any navy boats, subs, aircraft and amphibians.

Probably got something lying around for almost any of them, definitely a few unicorns in there too  , and a bunch of half-finished unicorns : . Depending how many ideas we have we could always try a "pick any two things from the list" GB, e.g. 1980s desert or late WWII wheelies or sci-fi unicorns or 1980s sci-fi or what have you

That does make sense

Although I'm with Rob in that maybe we can put the poll up perhaps the end of next week as I think we'll have kicked enough ideas around by then; and that'd mean we'd be ready for February?

Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

My thoughts for the next GB:

Cold War Jets (because there were a lot of great planes then - especially the shiny ones).
Unicorn Build (that one kit that keeps mocking you from the stash because it knows you will never build it).
Civilian Build (land, sea, or air - anything at all).
Diorama Build (anything at all - it doesn't even need to have a figure).
Your Special Thing Build (the kit you bought that brings back a special memory).

And, of course, our annual SciFi build.

Currently there is a helicopter sig going on until....???

We need to give ample time for as many as possible to respond, give input and vote
Many are returning from vacation and back to work, so modelling forum attendance is a low priority
No need to rush voting for stuff, build a helicopter if you are antsy

We've done a lot of bloody voting over here lately - happy to wait a bit before I have to exercise my democratic rights again! Even got a job where they store all the ballot papers.

You had me at the Cold War Jets...  :P

I have a possible subject for the Unicorn build, but Jesus that kit is so horrible that I don't know if I can commit to that build anytime soon  :bash:

Anyway, let's put up a poll and see what happens... :thumb2:

Organizing a list for the poll. There are twelve suggestions so far.
The Summer Sci Fi IS already a go and will be on June1st to August 31st so no vote needed there.
Get your other suggestions in ASAP!!
