Games Workshop - Red Gobbo's Surprise

Post by Tomcat64 »

My original intention for this group build was something fairly elaborate but since the last project overran severely I've had to drastically scale back but still wanted to take part.

So after a quick stash dive this evening I pulled out something Christmassy... sort of :shifty: courtesy of Games Workshop/Warhammer/Whatever they're calling themselves this week (anyone else remember when Citadel started out casting white metal D&D figures?)
Image

Each year they bring out "Commemerative" figures and this is the Christmas one from a couple of years back
Image

Nothing too taxing inside the box - although the 40mm round base appears to have gone walkies and has probably been donated to another figure along the way; no biggy I'm sure I can find another one
Image

After a happy half hour clipping, cleaning, sanding & glueing I had the four main components assembled
Image

And ready for a quick dry fit
Image

We'll leave that to settle & cure overnight and then see if there are any obvious seams that need some attention before giving it a coat of primer.

Hopefully I can crack on with this over a few evenings and get it done in time for the festivities

Thanks for looking :cheers2:
Cheers, Neil

After sorting out the seams and mounting on sticks/pots everything was given a hosing of Ultimate Grey primer
Image

I then starting blocking out base colours... a dark red for the coat, brown for the chimney & sack and black for the roof tiles
Image

Work on the main character then continued by applying lighter shades for the red coat & giving it an overall wash
Image

Flipping him over I've picked out the "white" trim sections in a light grey for now, and made a start on the face & hands... laying down a dark green as a base, picking out detail in a lighter green and then washing everything down again - I'll work back in with the light green again once this is dry
Image

And finally work has continued on the base with the black tiles getting a grey highlight, and work on varying shades of different browns on the chimney bricks and loot sack
Image

Thanks for looking :cheers2:

I had another good session in the den yesterday and have made more progress... I hate photographing at this scale though as all the brushwork blemishes get blown wayyyy out of proportion (more on that in a moment)

First the base - I ran a lighter colour to represent some mortar between the bricks and also blocked out the lighter colours - I'm ultimately planning on using snow effect but want a light base to work with
Image

Onto the figure and areas being blocked out here too :)
Image

The first attempt at the stripes on the dynamite stick were... suboptimal
Image

But I got everything tidied up... remember what I was saying about photography at this scale blowing out of proportion? The rough edges on the blue stripes aren't visible to the eye (I got Mrs TC to check it too!) - in reality this dude is about an inch tall so this is just about done
Image

Work continued on the base - still got a bit to do here but moving along
Image

And around the chimney top - I'm going to drip some water effect on the icicles to see if that gives them a bit more "life"
Image

That's all for now - I suspect this'll be one that'll get finished off between Christmas & the New Year :cheers2:

Looks pretty good to me at that scale I'd have it a big splodge of whatever the last colour was.

Managed to crack on with this one today and I think it's just about there...

Finished the base off and assembled all the bits including the spare base... around the back there was the grappling hook attached to a string of Christmas lights
Image

And just some general tidying up around the front - oh the fencing (palings?) along the roof ridge were done with a mixture of rust shades & black to give them a bit of depth
Image

I've then added water effects to the icicles and added a layer of Vallejo snow textured paint
Image

These will take about 24 hours to fully dry so I'll see how they look tomorrow and add more if it looks a bit patchy
Image

Thanks for looking :cheers2:

Yep, old TC has really fallen through the looking glass on this one. Its the stuff of nightmares and could ruin the magic of Christmas.

The only redeeming thing about it is it is SO well done, cracking job mate
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.
