Air Canada 747-200 1/390 scale

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

This kit is proof that I am a sucker for nice decals and nostalgia
I have flown on one of these brutes and bought this kit for a sci-fi build where it gets buried in sand...but I can't destroy it so will build this one and get another for that project.
Image

These cool Maple Leaf tail decals are the ones that enticed me and stopped me from destroying the kit in my Mad Max Thunderdome diorama
Image

I have both wings cemented together and Bondo putty on their leading edges and I opened up all the windows with a mini drill

Thanks Dave, at least I know I am being watched. Now I have to behave myself
Those are $1 Christmas LED lights. I will hack up and rewire so as to eliminate the Chrismas stars and then figure how to do the stand and hide the wires
I like the second photo with the plane in the air.
I learned I suck at panel lines and have had to fill and re-sand the wings :bash:

So working on wings and the challenge of the aluminum with brighter triangle inset
I chose to try two different Bare Metal Foils, BMF, and see what I could do. Main reasons no airbrush and I suck at silver and chrome paint
Image

So Matt aluminum and bright Chrome BMF on the horizontal tail parts
Image
Yea, not bad a little tricky around the leading edges and overlaps

I also put aluminum BMF inside of both halves to blunt the LED that otherwise shine right through the plastic

This is the beauty I am after
Image

Trying to get those bright bits on the wing with aluminum and chrome BMF

Image

BMF is interesting to work with. I found large parts done as one and then cut back what you don't want seemed to give me the smoothest finish. Still, a dog hair or lint gets stuck under very easily.

^That's the easy bit. Painting the scowls and looks of disdain on the cabin crew at that scale will be a real challenge.

Ok, that was freaking hilarious :D
I agree, the service with a smile is well and far lost these days on airlines, especially AC
Passengers usually have matching faces mid flight on

Super excited about this idea.
One of the coolest things about the Dagobah X-Wing build was making the spot lights and actually lighting them. So to go a bit further....
I purchased some fiberoptic cable and a LED light source on E Bay, it was $14 CAD
Image

Fiberoptic cable lets you take a single light source and route it to a destination...like sending it through a wing to the lamps like I have done below. I crudely used a headlamp's halogen as the light source.
Image

Taking it one step farther, I painted some cut cable with Tamiya clear blue, red, orange and green. The colours will transfer through either end
Image

Here is the orange end in the wing lamp
Image

Now when you have a concealed light source, likely an LED due to minimal heat production, you will only see the light through the fiberoptic. This is super cool to me and opens up lighting options and colour options for multiple builds
Perfect place in a 747 to light her up a bit :D

Did a little hobby shop visit on Friday past and scored something that has rekindled my affinity for commercial airline models.

Image

The Fine Scale Modeler book was a bargain, actually located on the sale table at the LHS. I have scored a few books on figures and even an Eduard Jug kit from that table. So for 8.50 CAD, I have a cool reference book for trying to finish off this build and a bit of motivation.

Hey thanks :thumb2: The lighting is very exciting and fibre optics is a cool addition to a kit. Ya the build itself
The kit is just there third box on the bottom left at the back behind the piles of leather....

Starting a re-visit to this build after a YEAR since I started it!!!
I have re-populated most of the photos, ones I can find anyways....thanks so much P bucket :pistols:
Image

Quite clearly I am going to have to boost my light blocking from the inside with black paint
Image
Image

Have switched over the larger Christmas LEd's to the smaller SMD Led's plus added fiberoptic lines to the two wing lights. These little LED's pump out a lot of light and it pushes through my foil lining inside the plane. The fiberoptics are driven by the internal lights.
Thinking of adding a belly and top fiberotic as well

Image

Image

Casual summer build, taking my time and pecking away at it.

Twenty minutes before bedtime modelling....added a red LED to the top and finished rough sand of the jet engines and mounts

I did another quick pre bedtime session Sunday and got the bottom of the wings BMF covered and then ran a toothpick into the grooves on wings following the panel lines

Some progress on a Saturday.
Primed the model in Ultimate black in order to block out light passing through the plastic fuselage....yep that worked :th:
I always think everything looks so bad ass in Ultimate black primer

Testing the wing root light

And an above shot....sorry I took out the red dorsal light so I didn't spray it black! 'Cause I would have

Electronics for the dorsal flashing beacon. I am not going to do a ventral one as it cannot be seen
Image

This is from a train supplier and the cheapest one I could find. If I knew more about the circuitry, I could easily put this together for far less than $17. Tested it out on the red smd Led and it works great

Got the white primer on fuselage now and the tail painted gloss blue...Tamiya X 3 royal blue, an awesome colour to spray especially with lacquer thinner as the diluent.

Ya, it is actually kinda fun if I can manage the time and energy
Have to get the shiny layers of white on, stop myself from tearing off the ok-ish engine paint, do windows with clear stuff and decals and stand
I am thinking a big puffy cloud to cover the stand and wires.
I get 10 days off coming soon so should have some time to get her done. I have a course in Seattle on the 10th and 11th, then supposed to visit some shady American character on way home and drop off "The Package" :

First day of 10 day vacation..two emergency calls already, neither were emergencies :wall:
Been smokey at home this week due to fires in the interior of BC. The wind had shifted and brought their air and smoke down to the lower mainland. So impossible to do much outside or you get a sore throat and itchy eyes...it is really gross. Air quality is as bad as I have EVER seen it.

Instead, I stayed in and worked on the 747 , listened to radio and tried to watch the live show, but kept getting booted out or the sound went off. Thanks uTube :pistols:

Sanded up any surface defects on the fuselage and then fired up the Grex airbrush with some Ultimate white primer.
I did a touch up layer then decided to do a couple passes more and make this my final white coat, with a layer of Future on top
Cutting out the maple leaf for the tail section to remove it from the blue decal as I already painted the tail Royal Blue
Image

Then I worked on an aluminum insert into the tail...I have dubbed it the "poop shoot"Image
Image

Rest of decals on

If the lazy day continues this way, I might finish her tonight :cheers2:

Man, my eyes hurt just looking at that maple leaf. Hat's off to you for that!

The haze is annoying here, too. Though it makes for some amazing sunsets.

Ok gents, got her done
Had to do some BMF 'fillets' around the main wing roots as suddenly gaps appeared on final assembly :
Added the BMF aluminum stripe up the tail fin, then soldered the leads together for the LEDs and job done

Anyhow, she is off to the wild blue yonder......does anyone say that anymore?????

So let's take a plane ride, skies look pretty clear as we take off over the Pacific this afternoon
Image

Nice smooth flight
Image

Then it starts getting darker out...turn on the cabin lights
Image

Image

And darker...wing's lights are helpful
Image

Waaaaayyy past midnight now
Image

And daybreaks time to land back home
Image

....thanks for flying with us, please return your seat to its' full upright position and secure your tray, don't forget to bring your personal items with you as you deplane and please be careful of the overhead bins as items may have shifted during the flight and knock you on your stupid head as you block the f'ing passageway from everyone else trying to get the hell off of this sardine can and breathe some fresh air. Please come again :D

Thanks John
Happy to get this one done after over a year since it started

Hmmm up next, the Ferrari F40 and the 911 Porsche rebuild are sharing some desk space right now
I am planning for the ISM Space build in October...might do two kits
I seem to have lost my mind and have purchased a few kits this summer.....F360 spider, another ahem three sea kings, a cool Canadian SAR Sea Knight Labrador , Canadian Cf-5 and CF-18 and a couple others. I am all over the place :shifty:
Must be the heat, vacation and smoke

Jinkies , the gig is up!!!!
Hey Buddy, ya hi
Well, hey aren't you supposed to be on vacation for a month, you know travelling, away from your computer that kind of thing.
Ummm, ya well see this is how it was, my computer had a hostile takeover and they decided to irritate friends, ya that it, that's the ticket. Otherwise I would NEVER have posted such alternate facts.

I am just surprised as you, really :shifty:
