Space Cadet #11 - Bandai Scout Trooper and Speeder - 1:12

Post by bfrd »

The following information from Image.
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Scout_trooper wrote: Scout Trooper
Image

Scout troopers, also known as biker scouts and Imperial sharpshooters, were specially trained stormtroopers of the Imperial Army's Stormtrooper Corps. They were used by the Galactic Empire on a range of missions, which mostly involved reconnaissance. They had lighter armor than standard stormtroopers, much like their urban counterparts, patrol stormtroopers.

History

Succeeding the clone scout troopers of the Galactic Republic, scout troopers provided the excellent long-range fire for their stormtrooper counterparts. During the early rebellion against the Galactic Empire, scout troopers encountered the Spectres on Lothal. Scout troopers could be found aboard Darth Vader's personal fleet, Death Squadron. One of the scout troopers' priorities were to aid the Sith Lord in crushing the Rebel Alliance along with its sympathizers and secret allies.

Scout troopers notably protected the Death Star's shield generator on Endor in 4 ABY, which shielded the construction of the Death Star II over the forest moon. Their presence was due to the remoteness of the shield bunker, which necessitated speeder bikes; and the thick forest environment, which demanded quick reflexes to traverse the landscape at high speeds. At least four scout troopers encountered Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Chewbacca whilst on patrol. Scout troopers would later participate in the Battle of Endor. They later participated in the Battle of Jakku.

Equipment

Equipped with light armor for greater mobility and optics in their helmets that allowed faster reaction times when piloting speeder bikes, scout troopers were expert marksmen, trained in reconnaissance and infiltration as well as additional independence and adaptability than most Imperial troops. They commonly utilized 614-AvA speeder bikes, and later 74-Z speeder bikes, as well as All Terrain Recon Transports. Scout troopers could carry an EC-17 hold-out blaster and shock grenades. Also within their ranks were the sniper troopers, specialists trained to use smoke grenades and the E-11s long-range blaster. Their helmets could also be retracted up while still being worn, allowing the wearer's face to be revealed.
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/74-Z_speeder_bike wrote: 74-Z speeder bike
Image

The 74-Z speeder bike was a model of speeder bike which saw service during the Clone Wars and then later used by the Galactic Empire in combat, and for reconnaissance purposes during the Galactic Civil War. They were usually piloted by scout troopers and were able to jam comlinks. The 74-Z speeder bikes had the machinery that the Empire thought was unnecessarily stripped off to maximize speed. Some might call it a "death trap" but the speeder bikes terrain sensors had a connection to a HUD all scout troopers had to tell what was ahead of them.

In the thirty years after the Battle of Endor, 74-Z speeder bikes could be found on the black market.
Kit Information and Sprues

Image

This is a lovely kit initially released in 2015 by Bandai. As with all of Bandai's kits, it is snap fit and the quality is excellent. The parts are molded in color correct plastic. It should also be noted that even within the same color sprue there are multiple colors and types of plastic. Some of the parts are strong glossy plastic and others are softer and have a matte finish. The Scout Trooper is fully jointed and poseable.

My first thought was to remove all of the "white" pieces for priming and paint.

Image

After careful consideration, I chose to keep the parts as they came off the sprues. The Scout Trooper's armor is decidedly shiny and I felt it was easier to just leave it be than trying to prime, paint, and then gloss. Here are some progress shots of the Scout Trooper. Usually taken after each page of the instructions.

The only problem I ran into was while removing the leftover sprue gate on one of the tiniest parts I removed too much. You can see this part above in the side shot before the arm is attached. I don't think anybody would notice if it weren't pointed out. Just something to keep in mind if you build this kit. In hindsight, I would have used a sander on the tiny parts instead of a knife. Otherwise, these Bandai kits are hard to beat when it comes to the quality of engineering.

Thanks for watching, please be sure to tip your waiter or waitress and fill out the comment card.

Technically, this one isn't finished. I still have the speeder to do and that will need to be painted. Then the dreaded diorama. I say dreaded because I have never attempted what I think I am going to attempt. Like most things, it will either be cool or crash and burn in craptasitic fashion.

You have Bob now; I need somebody to keep me moving in the right direction!

I spent yesterday cleaning up the parts for the speeder and painting. I primed the “brown” body parts in gray badger primer. I used Vallejo Model Air USA Flat Brown. The rest of the parts were primed in badger black. To make the model a little more interesting I decided to paint the “gray” parts in various Vallejo Metal Color tones. Primarily Magnesium. Accent pieces were done in Dull Aluminum. I used Steel for others. In reality it is quite difficult to see the difference between the Steel and Magnesium.

After the paint was dry I gathered the parts into a pile and let Yoda sort them out.

The build was very straight forward and enjoyable. The following pictures show the progress. Roughly after each page of instructions. However, some steps show multiple angles.

Thanks for the comments, this is a really fun build. I did send a pic of the Scout Trooper on the speeder to my daughter with the caption of "I'm on top of the world!". Those poseable figures are fun. I made K2SO do the YMCA dance!

Back to the current build...
I just hope I can pull off the diorama. I don't want to divulge my complete plans in case they don't come to fruition, but it will certainly get my best shot. I have picked up some extruded polystyrene insulation panels from the hardware store. I also have some DryDex (you will see why in a bit). Another trip to the craft store found some lichen and Mod Podge. Finally, the LHS saw me pick up some additional foliage and blended turf. It almost seems like I know what I am doing. I assure you, I do not. I will post up some pictures of the materials later tonight when I get back home. Some of the other things I have planned will be printed and then painted. I couldn't stomach spending $10 for a rock when I can just make one.

Here is a video I found of an AWESOME Star Wars - Endor diorama.

I am going to try and duplicate some of the things he did. Probably poorly, but we will have to wait and see. This is really my first attempt at any type of diorama with plants and turf and those bits. It looks easy on TV!

Regardless, thanks for the kind comments. These Sci-Fi builds are some of the most fun I have had in a while. You guys make it even more fun with the comments; keep them coming.

Here is the first tree prototype. The method is pretty easy so far. The spakeling material changes from pink to white as it dries. I helped this one along with a small heat gun. Probably let it dry at 24 hrs before I paint. Some of the very top and bottom aren’t quite covered. I will need to figure out a better way to hold the tube. Not bad for a first try.

I got some color down on the test tree. I think the next week new will get a clear coat before the color. The paint is heavily diluted with water and is softening the DryDex. I also think I went a little too dark.

If all goes to plan, hitting a tree isn't going to be this guy's primary concern (but maybe it should be)!

**Note: Meme idea uncerimoniously stolen from Scott...

After many tries with a few different materials, I have rocks! Now, I just need to figure out if I am going to use them or not.

I picked up a rock mold from the LHS. It is made of silicone and produced by Woodland Scenics. I also picked up some Lightweight Hydrocal plaster. Before I tried the plaster I tried some of the UV resin from my 3D printer. I just dropped some resin into the mold and placed in a homemade curing box. The result wasn't terrible and perhaps could have been viable with a little more care. Bubbles in the resin prevented the rocks from fully forming. This is some really thick stuff and not really designed for this application.

The next three tries were with the plaster. The first mix was awful, I completely guessed at the mix ratio and skipped the step of letting it sit before mixing. The gloopy mess never really cured. The second attempt was better, but still didn't fully set after 24 hours. The third attempt was completely solid after 1 hour! All I can say about Hydrocal is that it is ALL about mixing the product correctly. Measuring would probably be a good idea, but I'm not that smart. I also used my little Badger paint mixer, that really seemed to get some of the lumps out of the mixture.

Image

I also just printed a rock from Thingiverse on my FDM printer.
Image

I want to let the plaster cure for a little while longer before I paint. I will also need to file down the bottoms. It is solid, but the cardboard box top that I left it on overnight shows signs of moisture coming off of the castings.

a great start for sure but just use real rocks it's easier and they can still be painted the last rocks I used was sandstone got a big rock and hulk smashed it into smaller ones lol and the dust you make while smashing them comes in handy too, another note to making a dio go to the local diy store with some small bags a clean up the dust and debris around where the bricks are kept makes for realistic rubble, same as using different coloured sands and such for different planets surfaces

I started work on the diorama base. I used extruded polystyrene insulation panels for the structure from the hardware store. It came in a 24” x 24” sheet which I cut in half.

Image

I also picked up some concrete anchors. They have a larger thread pattern which makes them ideal for the insulation panels.

Image

Then it was just a matter of screwing the panels together.

Image

Image

The author of the YouTube video I posted earlier on in the thread made his image available to me. I cropped a portion and sent it to the printer to get a background made.

Image

Next I started work on the speeder mount. The kit comes with a 2 part mounting system, but I don’t want to have to mount the speeder against the back wall. So, I decided to mount the vertical part into the second tree I am making. I just traced out the basic shape and cut into the tree.

Image

Next, I am using loads of PVA glue to keep the part in place. I will use the same technique as before once dry. I should be able to completely hide the plastic part inside the tree. I used a heat gun on the transparent part to adjust the angle of the speeder a little.

Image

Thanks for stopping by. :cheers2:

Thanks, Scott! Although the only journey I am going on seems to be of madness!

I realized that I could reinforce the Bandai part with good ole duct tape! I taped it up and started on the bark. I did get a little help from my daughter. These are not the easiest things to hold while working with the spackling. I used kabob skewers to help hold the ends. They work well inside of the foam I sprayed earlier.

Image

I am not sure if I should paint the transparent part or clean it up. It is fairly short and likely won't be seen. I suspect I will clean it up. Then I will get sloppy with painting the tree and paint it. But Hey, that's just a plan. We all know how well plans work out.

Your set and design looks great. Very creative :thumb2:

You are very correct. I have a can of Super77, but I can't seem to find it. :eeek: I did find a can of something else. I spent way too long unclogging the nozzle. I will buy a new can of Super77 for the final assembly. Hard to beat that stuff for a spray adhesive.

Thanks Dan (I think... not familiar with swamp donkey).

I worked on the stepped terrain feature this afternoon. I used regular PVA glue on the two parts last night. I couldn’t find my clamps so I just used toothpicks while the glue set. Nice and solid by this afternoon.

I plan on covering the entire base in sculpt-a-mold, but didn’t want to have to fill in the “step” with plaster. So, I decided to use the spray foam. I placed the part on wax paper to keep the foam from sticking on the bottom. Then I just sprayed a liberal amount along the edges I needed to fill. While it is freshly applied it is somewhat pliable. I used a bamboo skewer to manipulate the foam just a little.

Image

I let that dry for several hours and then just used my hobby knife with the blade extended fully. This is what I call danger mode. No blood was spilled today, oddly enough. Whilst trimming I found a hollow spot and another that didn’t dry fully. I just added a bit more and let dry a couple of hours more. Since it was a much smaller amount it would take as long to dry.

Image

I may trim a bit more, but only the time and tide will tell.

I used some Sculptamold to coat the entire base. This is the first time I used this product and it isn’t what I expected. The texture isn’t uniform. It doesn’t spread as nicely as I would have liked. I just hope it sticks. I meant to press the trees into the base before the sculptamold set. Oops... I will have a couple of days to figure this out the next step.

I put some color down on the diorama base. I mixed up some brown and red for a dirt color. Then I blocked in some gray for what will be rocks.

Image

Still using the cheap hobby paints fairly thinned down with water. No sense in using my Vallejo paints.

I laid down the first layer of grass. I am using Woodland Scenics products. To secure the grass I used a bit of white glue mixed with water that I brushed onto the base.

Image

I think I mixed the glue a bit too thin. Then I compounded the problem by using a vacuum too soon. I put on another layer similar to the first, but used a thicker glue mix and worked in smaller sections.

Next, I secured the trees in place with 2 part epoxy. I placed the tree where I wanted and used a sharp hobby knife to stab around the perimeter of the tree. The plaster part popped right off. Good for getting the tree in place bad for the plaster sticking to the insulation panel. After getting the hole cut out I just popped the tree in place and let it sit overnight. Yoda isn’t any better than Bob, he forgot to remind me to take pictures of that part.

Once the trees were in place I realized that I had to readjust the speeder mount again. I also needed to add some tape to the mounting peg to make the connection fit a little tighter.

To do this I broke out a new tool. It allows you to cut out perfectly sized widths of “stuff”. In my case Tamiya tape. First I adjusted the width of the blades to the size of the peg.

Image

Next, I put a small strip of tape on the edge of my work bench.

Image

The I just cut.

Image

Image

Next up I started to use some of the moss and lichen I got at the craft store. I also found some plastic fern pieces.

Image

Not too sure how this is supposed to look, so I am just winging it.

Then I started to place some of my rock castings in various places.

Image

I think that is enough for right now.

Well, that is the old German word for it...

Trust me, If I can do this anyone can. I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I watched a bunch of videos on the internet and then just started. I was very intimidated at first as well, but it really is quite easy to get something decent. Thanks for the compliment though, I will continue to try and not disappoint.
